In 1974 humans sent a coded message to space in an attempt to communicate with other intelligent beings. The message was a binary-coded graphic containing information about:

Atomic numbers of key elements (H, C, N, O, P)
DNA nucleotide formulas
DNA nucleotide count and double helix structure
Human height, population, and a human figure

When decoded, it formed a visual image of humanity and Earth.
Target and Distance
The signal was aimed at the globular star cluster M13, about 25,000 light-years away in the Milky Way.
Signal Strength
Using Arecibo’s megawatt transmitter and 305‑meter dish, the broadcast was powerful enough to be detected by a similar antenna anywhere in the galaxy. The total power output was equivalent to 20 trillion watts.
